Video ad analysis and creative audit

Every ad is a hypothesis; most accounts never read the result. NextVector helps creative teams put structure and precision behind volume: one hypothesis per concept, five gates per test, and a learning library that makes every brief smarter than the last.

Direction before speed. Testing throughput only becomes velocity when every asset is pointed by a hypothesis.
The platform shift

Creative is now the targeting.

Meta's Andromeda retrieval system reads the visuals, audio, on-screen text and landing page of an ad to decide who sees it. Audiences, bidding and placement have been absorbed by automation. What remains in your hands is the input the machine learns from.

The targeting signal moved into the asset. The creative pool is now the audience strategy.
The structural consequence

Creative diversity is a structural requirement, not a testing preference. A thin feed gives the system nothing to match against a fragmented audience.

Diversity means concepts

Ten crops of the same idea don't expand the matching space. The unit of testing is the concept, with format and hook variants nested underneath.

Structure for scale

Volume only scales when every asset knows where it belongs.

Name every asset to its territory, concept, hook and format. Then a result at asset level rolls up into a learning at territory level, and you reinvest in territories rather than cloning single ads. Speed is motion; velocity is progress.

Territory → concept → variant. Structure is what turns hundreds of assets into a handful of readable answers.
The approach

One hypothesis, five gates.

Every creative that enters an account travels the same loop. Each gate protects the one after it: weak assets never reach the auction, unpowered tests never reach a read, noisy reads never reach a verdict, and no verdict escapes the learning library.

Gate 01 · Pre-flight

Kill obvious losers on the desk, not in the auction.

Before a pound is spent, score every asset against platform best practice: text coverage, legibility, visual hierarchy, scroll-stop potential, brand consistency and format fit. Weak assets don't just underperform; they waste learning budget and pollute the read for everything tested alongside them.

Where NextVector helps: FocusLab scores each video against these criteria before spend. Try the example below.

The quality gate. Only assets that clear the bar earn learning budget.
Gate 02 · Design

A test without an MDE is an anecdote with a budget.

Every test gets a documented hypothesis, a pre-registered primary metric, a sample-size and minimum-detectable-effect calculation, and a read date. Tests that can't reach significance at the available budget shouldn't run, or should be redesigned as directional reads and labelled honestly as such. Keep a backlog of six or more prioritised hypotheses, reviewed quarterly.

Where NextVector helps: A creative review checks recent tests against this anatomy and rebuilds the backlog with you.

If any field is blank, the test isn't designed yet. It's a guess with spend attached.

Gate 03 · Early read

Day 1 is noise. Day 3–5 is honest.

Calling winners early is a classification problem, so validate it rather than feel it. Check 6–12 months of history: did early signals (hook rate, thumbstop, CTR) actually predict the final winners? If the early signal doesn't classify past winners, it doesn't earn the right to kill future ones. Direct-response accounts should bias toward killing fast; brand work toward protecting potential heroes.

Where NextVector helps: An account audit can back-test your kill and scale rules against your own historical results.

Two creatives, one rule. Identical in day 1–2 noise; the validated window separates them. Illustrative.
Gate 04 · Measure

Platform-attributed lift is a starting point, not a verdict.

Measurement is a ladder, and confidence climbs it. Climb as high as budget and addressability allow, and respect the full attribution window rather than the dashboard on day 14. Never let the bottom rung set targets on its own.

Where NextVector helps: A review shows which rung each of your current decisions actually rests on.

The measurement ladder. Climb as high as the budget allows.
Gate 05 · Bank

The output of a test is a transferable insight, not a winning ad.

Log the delta first, the interpretation second and the action third. Then cite the library in every new brief, so each quarter's brief is smarter than the last.

Where NextVector helps: Workflow support sets up the library and the brief template that cites it.
£11.45CPO vs £13.69 · no-CTA vs CTA static
The static without a call to action beat the one with it.

On a quick-service restaurant conversion campaign, the softer sell drove cheaper orders. It didn't become a footnote; it became a deliberately designed follow-up test.

Re-test
−41%CPO vs campaign average · video/carousel concept
The win came from creative, not bid strategy.

When one insurance product line outperformed its sibling, the diagnosis traced to incentive-led messaging, so the same logic was briefed into the other line: transferring the territory, not cloning the asset.

Transfer
1living learning library
Every result enters the library, and the library is cited in every new brief.

Learning that lives in people's heads leaves with them. Without the library, the same mistakes repeat each quarter.

The rule

Two reads from James's own accounts, anonymised; staged the way learnings should be logged — delta first, interpretation second, action third.

How mature is your testing programme?

Based on the seven marks of a mature creative-testing programme. Your answers stay on this page.

01 · Backlog
Is there a prioritised backlog of six or more hypotheses, reviewed each quarter?
02 · Concept diversity
Does the account carry several distinct concepts, not crops of one idea?
03 · Pre-flight
Is every asset scored against best practice before it earns spend?
04 · Test design
Does every test have a hypothesis, primary metric, MDE and read date?
05 · Early read
Are kill and scale thresholds validated against past winners?
06 · Measurement
Do decisions rest on more than platform-attributed lift?
07 · Learning library
Is every result logged and cited in the next brief?

Questions

What creative teams ask

Can a creative score predict sales or whether an ad will stop the scroll?
A score alone cannot establish audience response or sales. Pre-flight scoring removes obvious weaknesses before spend; the test design, early-read rules and measurement decide what actually worked.
Why test concepts rather than variants?
Platforms such as Meta's Andromeda read the creative itself to decide who sees it. Ten crops of one idea give the system little new to match; distinct concepts, with hook and format variants nested underneath, expand what it can learn.
Is this only for Meta?
No. Performance Max asset groups, TikTok Smart+, DV360 optimised rotation and Demand Gen all reward breadth of high-quality input. The operating model is the same.
What does FocusLab check?
The opening seconds, motion and pacing, mobile framing, captions and sound-off reading, brand presence and the call to action.
